For more than 30 years I have been helping those who have been tragically injured when truck drivers and companies recklessly and knowingly fail to follow the federal and state safety rules enacted to protect us all from harm. The consequences are too often catastrophic. The statistics are startling:
- There were 10.9 million large trucks registered on our highways in 2014.
- 3,852 people died in large truck crashes in 2015
- 69% of the people who died in 2015 were occupants of passenger vehicles.
- About 1 in 10 highway deaths occurs in a crash involving a large truck.
To make sure you or your loved ones do not become one of these horrible statistics, here are some tips to follow:
- Avoid traveling in a truck driver’s blind spot (see the photo attached indicating the four blind spots for a truck driver highlighted in yellow). One third of fatal crashes between cars and trucks occur in these four blind spot.
- Leave plenty of room if you are traveling in front of a truck and always use your turn signal when slowing to make a turn. Loaded trucks need 20 to 40 percent more distance than cars to stop.
- Do not travel too closely behind a truck. It is not uncommon for debris to fly off a truck and hit your car.
- Be especially cautious during daytime hours. In 2013, nearly 8 in 10 fatal crashes occurred during the weekday, mostly between 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
